At law school, we learned about "proximate cause," one of the few valuable concepts you can take from three years of drudgery. But was that the proximate cause? No, the real proximate cause, the one that's really at fault, was the February unemployment report, which came out on March 8. At the time, many thought the proximate cause of Nvidia's pirouette was the performance of two chipmaker peers. Surely those two updates couldn't be the proximate cause of the peak of Nvidia, right?

The U.S. has passed a series of export controls starting in October 2022 aimed at restricting China's access to advanced chip technology, particularly those used in AI applications. According to data from tech consultancy Omdia, China consumes nearly 50% of the world's semiconductors as it is the biggest market for assembling consumer devices. But, soon after, it was reported that Nvidia was working on a new chip made for China. The company did not respond to a request for comment on their plans for the China market. An analysis of Huawei's Mate 60 Pro smartphone by TechInsights revealed an advanced chip made by China's top chip maker, SMIC.

Investors may want to keep an eye on Marvell Technology , as it is poised for artificial intelligence success, according to Wall Street analysts. The commentary comes on the back of the chipmaker's AI event on Thursday, where it announced a new compute customer many speculate could be Microsoft. On the back of the event, Wells Fargo analyst Gary Mobley lifted 2025 revenue and earnings per share estimates to account for a quicker ramp in AI sales. While Morgan Stanley continues to view the stock as an AI winner, analyst Joseph Moore noted he still favors Nvidia. That is in part due to the "sideways" action Marvell has experienced over the past year and its elevated multiple.

If recent history is any guide, snatching up shares of Marvell Technology (MRVL) ahead of its upcoming AI presentation could potentially pay off for investors, according to Citi. Given this setup, analyst Atif Malik opened a positive catalyst watch on the semiconductor stock ahead of its April 11 event, with its $91 price target implying 33% upside from Tuesday's close. MRVL YTD mountain Marvell shares in 2024 Nvidia, Broadcom and AMD "moved up into their respective AI days and the setup appears similar for MRVL after the recent pullback," he wrote. The dominant global designer and supplier of AI chips aims to capture a portion of an exploding market for custom AI chips and to protect itself from the growing number of companies interested in finding alternatives to its products. Nvidia officials have met with representatives from Amazon.com , Meta, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI to discuss making custom chips for them, according to two sources familiar with the meetings. $30 billion marketAccording to estimates from research firm 650 Group's Alan Weckel, the data center custom chip market will grow to as much as $10 billion this year, and double that in 2025. The broader custom chip market was worth roughly $30 billion in 2023, which amounts to roughly 5% of annual global chip sales, according to Needham analyst Charles Shi. UBS is getting more bullish on the outlook for artificial intelligence and bracing for another prosperous year for the "tech theme of the decade." The firm lifted its revenue forecast for AI by 40%. In comparison, it took the smart devices industry more than 10 years for its revenues to grow by 15 times. "Meanwhile, software, with broadening AI demand trends from applications and models, is a defensive play, thanks to its strong recurring revenue base." Within the semiconductor industry, UBS favors logic, memory, capital equipment and foundry names, while companies exposed to office productivity, cloud and models appear best situated in software.
